Devadder's inspiration for Grace came from the complexity of emotions that cannot be encapsulated by words alone. The designer drew parallels between this complexity and the intricate forms found in nature, resulting in a design that is as elegant as it is complex. The designer also found inspiration in dance, particularly ballet and tango, where emotions are translated into movements and forms. This fusion of inspiration sources gave birth to a piece of furniture that is not just functional, but also emotionally evocative.
What sets Grace apart is its ability to elicit different interpretations and feelings from different observers. The design's unique properties provide a 'wow' factor that changes from person to person, making each interaction with the chair a unique experience. This dynamic quality gives the design a certain personality and soul, enhancing its value beyond its functional purpose.
The realization of Grace involved the use of cutting-edge technology. The chair's structure was 3D printed using Tusk SolidGrey3000, a material known for its high degree of stiffness and impact resistance. This material allowed the design to withstand weights ranging from 2000N to 6000N without significant deformation. The chair was then manually upholstered using Tonus 4 fabric from Kvadrat, chosen for its flexibility and durability, and high resilience foam for added comfort.
Despite its innovative design and use of advanced technology, Grace faced several challenges during its realization. One of the main challenges was finding a material that could maintain the design's intricate shapes while supporting the weight of an adult. Another challenge was the desire to use fully recycled plastic for 3D printing, which was not feasible due to the strength requirements of the design. Despite these challenges, the final product is a testament to the designer's commitment to innovation and sustainability.
Grace's design journey began with the first sketch in December 2020, followed by the first digital plans in January 2021. The 3D printed structure was delivered in June 2021, and the fully upholstered and finished chair was collected in Antwerp in March 2022. This journey reflects the meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality that went into the creation of this unique piece of furniture.
The design's success was recognized with a Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2023, a prestigious accolade granted to outstanding creations that advance art, science, design, and technology. This award is a testament to the design's extraordinary excellence and its significant impact on the world of furniture design.
